Local volunteers pitch in to clean up Pennypack Park

More than 40 volunteers removed 43 bags of trash, which included a shopping cart, a television, and a wheelchair.

Pride of the community: More than 40 volunteers recently cleaned up the Sandy Run section of Pennypack Park.

Friends of Pennypack Park recently cleaned up the Sandy Run section of Pennypack Park, next to Austin Meehan Middle School.

Forty-three volunteers removed 43 bags of trash and cans.

Representing the Order of de Molay were Ryan Lienert, James McKeown, Walter S. Flores, Drew DiPietro, Logan McCusker, Kenneth Shinn, Victoria Shinn, Liam McKee, Mike Cappo, Xavier Mickles, Michael McKee, Walter Flores, David DiPietro and Lauren Mickles.

The friends and family of Danielle Calhoun-Lopez taking part were Javier and Julianne Lopez; Walt and Mary Calhoun; Joe Calhoun; John, Rhea and Emmy Calhoun; Jeanette and Megan Kania; and Kate Macikanycz and canines Loki and Max.

Other volunteers were Lisa and Patrick Plunkett, Jack and Michael Friedman, Kenneth Larsen, Ralph Smith, Linda Davies, Robert McMunn, Rich Glaser, Dean Lynd, Corinne Stobbe, Tim McAndrews, Karen Kaczorek, Jason Trenchard, Joyce Ferrero, Andrew Puzdrak, Audrey Walmsley and Nance Kerns.

Trash collected included a Kmart shopping cart, a TV, 14 cans of vegetables, a teddy bear, a BB gun, a “Scott Cummings for Traffic Court Judge” campaign sign, a bunch of Al Schmidt for City Commissioner pens, a coconut, a wheelchair and a Police and Fire Federal Credit Union insulated bag.

The next cleanup will be on Saturday, March 24, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the ballfield on Holme Avenue, between the bridge over Pennypack Creek and Nazareth Hospital.
